Nelly’s energy Truffle Bars – Review and Giveaway!

Truffles in box

I’ve really been making an effort eat healthier the past few weeks, and I’ve specifically targeted sugar.  Of course I still love a sweet treat, I just want to eat healthier versions.

So when I was recently contacted by Nelly’s energy Truffle Bars about doing a review and giveaway I was VERY excited.  And I’m even more excited to tell you that the company has generously offered to do a giveaway.  Nelly’s will ship three truffle bars to three lucky winners.  Read on for my thoughts on the flavors I tried, and how you can enter for a chance to try them yourself…

assorted truffle bars

While these bars aren’t straight up health food, they are a much better alternative to all the junk that’s out there tempting our kids (and let’s be honest, tempting us too.)  The bars are raw, vegan and handmade with whole food ingredients.

That all sounded great to me, but I was a little wary about how they would taste.  If you’ve tried “healthy” snacks before, you probably know what I’m talking about.  I didn’t know what to expect with these bars, but I was honestly blown away by how delicious they were.

PB truffle wrapper

The first bar I tried was the peanut butter flavor, and it was one of my favorites.  I love this combo so much I’m surprised that I haven’t actually turned into a piece of chocolate covered in peanut butter by now.

PB bite

This bar had the perfect amount of sweet to salty ratio – too much sugar with any peanut butter treat just doesn’t work for me.  The flavor and texture were so, so good.  I could have eaten more of these than I care to admit.

Coconut wrapper

I also love coconut, so I was excited to try the coconut bar.  I used to love me some Mounds and Almond Joy, and I ate my share of Bounty bars when I studied in London.  Would you believe me if I told you this bar was so much better than any of those candy bars?  It’s true, you guys.

coconut bite

Like the Peanut Butter Chocolate, this Coconut bar wasn’t too sweet, and I loved the texture.  This was amazing.  If you’re a coconut fan, you will LOVE this.

goji wrapper

Next up is the goji berry bar.  This was probably my least favorite of the bunch, but only because it just wasn’t my first choice in flavor.

goji bite

I did like that this bar had a bit more texture than the others, and it kind of reminded me of chocolate raspberry candy, which for me is a good thing.

mint wrapper

On to the mint chlorella bar…  I’ll admit that I was nervous to try this one.  The “chlorella” part scared me, and I wasn’t sure if this one would taste a little too “healthy”.  I shouldn’t have worried at all.  This tasted like a candy bar version of Thin Mint cookies.

mint bite

Being from the Chicago area I grew up eating Marshall Field’s Frango mints, and the flavor and texture of these bars reminded me of those melt -in-your-mouth minty morsels.  Not too overpowering, and no weird mint mouthwash taste.  This bar was incredible.

double choc wrapper

I left the double chocolate bar for last.  I love chocolate, so I’m not sure why I didn’t eat this sooner, but sometimes too much chocolate just doesn’t do it for me.

choc bite

You know what I’m going to say, right?  You guessed it – this bar was awesome.  Rich and chocolatey, without being bitter or too sweet.

I’m not sure if I was expecting flavorless cardboard, or if I just thought these might be a less satisfying version of the traditional dairy-laden sugar bombs we call “truffles”- and I used to call “heaven.”  I was seriously impressed with how delicious these bars were, and I’m so happy to know that there are healthier options out there for when my family needs a candy fix.

Nelly’s is currently doing a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for equipment so that the company can continue to expand.  This is a great opportunity for those of us who want healthier vegan options in stores to put our money where our mouths are – literally.

Now for the giveaway!  To enter the contest, leave a comment below telling me which flavor you’d most like to try – or what flavor you’d love to see Nelly’s make in the future.  You can increase your chances of winning by liking Nelly’s and C’est La Vegan’s facebook pages, and also by following C’est La Vegan on twitter.

Please leave a SEPARATE comment for each entry (up to 4 total entries per person).  The contest will close Saturday, October 19th at 9pm Pacific time, and I’ll notify the three winners via email on Sunday.  The contest is only open to US residents – our apologies to our overseas friends.  Good luck!
